Mother's Tears
Rain fell from the saddened sky and splashed upon her dark hair as she stood on the wet ground. It ran down her bangs and landed on her nose before journeying down her cheeks and finally dropping from her chin. Or maybe the droplets that fell down her cheeks were her tears. She had cried so many and they mingled with the rain.
Her bag felt heavy on her shoulder. It felt as if it were tying to weigh her down; trying to keep her there forever. She quickly banished the stupid thought. It was impossible. Lifting her hand, she whipped the rain away from her face. She shook her head, whipping drops of water to and fro as a frown crossed her thin lips.
She was alone again. And that scared her. It seemed she would always be alone. That terrified her even more. Her life was an endless cycle of life and death. Everyone around her died. It was as if she were cursed. Or a curse. She didn't understand and probably never would.
Her dark eyes gazed upon the soft gray stone, it's melancaly nature only aiding in saddening her more. A name was carved into the stone. The name of a soul lost to her far too soon. Her breath was caught in her throat and she felt as if she could barely breath as she read it over again.

In a flash, memories of the young boy unearthed themselves in her mind, assaulting her with painful memories. Memories of his happiness, of his pain played relentlessly. Ones of his indecision, others of triumphs.. Some of herself comforting him, playing with him.. Her heart felt as if it had been ripped out as the memories continued to play.
Then the rain lightened. The wet rat of a woman searched the sky for a reason, any reason at all. The land around her brightened even as the slight mist settled in. Why did they punish her so...?
"I'm down here, silly," said a young voice. Again, her breath was caught in her throat. She slowly turned her gaze down, finally settling on the small form. He smiled at her, that cute smile she had missed so dearly. His dark hair fell into his big blue eyes and he looked exactly like he had the last time she had seen him. She couldn't say a thing as she gazed at him. It was too good to be true. She was seeing her son once more...
"I love you, Mother," he said. She swallowed hard.
"What will you do now?" he asked. "You'll live on, that's what. Live on and be happy. Don't cry for me anymore, Mother. I'm okay, see? Don't cry anymore."
She still could not utter a word. Instead, she took a tentive step forward. Then another, and another, until she was there. The boy just stood there, looking at her. Then, slowly, he lifted his hands. With a strangled cry, she flung her arms around him, holding him as if never to let go. His thin arms snaked around her and held her as well. She didn't make a sound as more tears fell from her eyes and made trails on her soaked skin.
"I have to go now, Mother," he said softly. She responded by tightening her hold.
"No," she pleaded. "No, stay."
He frowned and nuzzled her neck with affection. "I have to. But I will be with you, Mother. Always."
He pulled himself away from her. She stared at him painfully. Then she leaned over and planted a kiss on his forehead.
"Good bye, Mother," he said. And then, right before her eyes, he disappeared. She slowly stood, wobbling around somewhat. Then she slowly smiled.
"Good bye, my son."
